Who Cares About Diversity?
Honestly speaking, after working for my company for more than 9 years, “Diversity Education” or related phone calls are the ones I always ignore. Although it is mandatory for every employee to go through such a training, I normally dial into the conference call just so that my manager can check me off the list and leave me alone.
So, when I was approached by a Denver University professor from the Education Department whom asked me to give a speech about corporate diversity and organization, I was scratching my head, “Coporate Diversity?! What the heck am I going to talk about?”
Well, I have to talk about something. So I figured it would be fun to see how these Ph.D and Master students react to the real world scenario. This is the slide I put on the projector tonight in the classroom:
The votes? Gay project manager and the Japanese born sales guy got the most votes followed by the female stock broker and the one arm technical writer. Only one student voted for the white straight male slacker who shows up late at work.
The purpose of the slide is that I want to make a point:
At the end of the day, it is not about who you are. It’s about what you can do and what value you bring into the room.
We will let go of the slacker regardless of the person’s skin color. My gay project manager absolutely kicks ass, so who cares if he plays on another team. Apparently, this concept is pretty foreign to the academic world. At the end of the class, I got the sense that the black students are indeed concerned about being black. And everybody is worried about gay guy’s fate out there in the jungle. Is this a perception disconnection between the academic and corporate worlds? Maybe .
I sometimes feel that the diversity thing is way over done in Corporate America. As a young female Asian engineer who has funky mixed Chinese and southern accent, discrimination is the last thing I worry about. But on the other hand, is that because we have done such a fine job in Corporate America to teach everybody to walk on the egg shells so that an “extreme-minority” such as myself doesn’t really notice being a minority? Hmm, again, this question is too deep for my little head to think about…

Very interesting! I would have said maybe the technical writer with one arm.
Do you think if you stacked up the minorities into one person - say a black, lesbian project manager - that it would still not matter so long as she still kicked ass in the office?

My first year with the company I was in that foundations program. We were a pretty close bunch too, a bunch of people right out of college working for a good company, so we had lots in common. So one day we had to go into a conference room for one of thoes “Ok people, let play nice” conference calls. One guy summed it up best:
“Ok, a white guy, a black girl and an asian guy got to a bar. Wait! Thats our happy hour”
Personally, I find these conference calls a bit insulting. In my line of work we are paid to be professionals. We are paid to go to client sites and do a job that properly represents our company. Do we really need a phone call telling us to all get along?
Besides, is a 45 minute call that everyone tunes out really going to make a difference?

I am glad I didn’t go through your type of “foundation” class… Bunch of new hires myself included did our ‘lets play nicely” event in NYC celebrating Yankee’s world series title back in 96 ..
To answer Ingrid’s question, I think I am pretty close to the “multipe minorities stacking up” scenario… Based on my own experience, people who are not viewed as mainstream do have to go through an initial phase to prove themselves.I think age probably matters the most. “Hey, how can we trust a kiddo who’s been out of the college for only 2 years to do this type of work? ” This type of questions are asked a lot simply because years of experiences are something people value. So, I think that black young lesbian lady can still win a lot of recognition if she has the skills and great work ethics…
Academic world is pretty loose on this whole diversity education stuff.. Poeple either hang out or not hang out.. no HR is going to chase after your tail to tell you that you gotta play nicely.. But at the faculty level.. things are different. My mother’s department was required by the University to hire one more minority professor, black, hispanic and native american preferred since Asian is considered as over-represented. They tried 3 years, rejected bunch of qualified white candidates to find someone… And later on, they were not really happy with their choice.. Go figure!

Oh.. here is a controversal opinion of mine.. I don’t believe in affamative action, especially in the acadamic world.
My black classmate scored 1400 on GRE and she got to go to Northwestern. The rest of us had to bust our asses to score 1800+ simply because we don’t belong to the “under-represented” category.Translation to that,” We think you are stupid so we will lower our standards to admit you.” I question where is the “equal opportunity” here? Why white and Asian kids have to score something high when Hispanic and Black can simply walk straight in with low scores? To me, that’s the biggest discrimination problem in the acadamic world. It also teaches the black and hispanics that they can lower their standards.. It’s not right… period!

To play devils advocate…..
One reason they would allow black/hispanic to get in with lower scores is not just a factor of under representation, but rather to stimulate growth within the black and hispanic communities. Schools in those communities tend to have a lower standard of education do to poor funding and a lack of good teachers. Giving opportunities to students who may score just below par according to a college but who have greatly excelled within their environment should be given an oppurtunity. I believe that if they can score a 1400 in a school who doesnt graduate a significant percentage of their students is just as good as getting an 1800 in a school with the best resorces available.

I agree that the education systems in the poor neighbourhood are scewed up… That’s where the money should go in and early education needs to be fixed.. So many kids who got admitted under this program simply couldn’t keep up with the peers. I have seen a lot of their confidences got destroied and eventually they withdraw . These spots could be available to the kids who do qualify and finally graduate.
My point: fix the problem at where they are.. when the kids are still young and developing..

Hmm, interesting post. But I am stuck on the not one, but two negative comments about people who are not in the real world but in the academic world. Talk about discrimination. If you haven’t had that experience, then stop looking down at the people who are in that realm. We’re not all as clueless and out of touch as people would like to believe.

That comment wasn’t heavywinter, it was me–just to clarify! I guess I didn’t change the thing right. Anyway, sorry if my comment was too harsh. I’m very touchy about people saying that people in academics aren’t living in the real world, because I think I work hard every day, trying to make a difference, and just because it’s not in corporate america doesn’t make it any less real.
I also see the diversity stuff come up a lot in our faculty hiring. For years, our department wanted to hire an ethnic minority and couldn’t find one who was qualified. But when they did hire two faculty members finally, they were well-qualified and a superb addition to our department. So I don’t know, maybe it was worth the wait?

Laura, all I am saying is that there is a culture difference between both corp and acadamic worlds. I probably shouldn’t call corp as the real world..since both worlds are pretty real.Trust me, I know how the academic world works.I grew up in one since both of my parents are professors and I spent enough years to be a student myself. However, culture difference does exist in both worlds and it was a culture shock once I moved away from my University lab to IBM’s conference room.
The problem I have here is with the College and Grad school admission programs which lower the standards for certain people.

Oh ..just for the record.. as I mentioned above, my mother’s department also waited for 3 years to finally hire a minority professor. However, they later had to let go 2 British falculties in order to keep the percentage right. And everybody in the department complained about it since the minority professor wasn’t as qualified as the Brits. It’s great that it worked out for your department, but sometimes, in order to make the numbers, the University had to do what they had to (i.e. letting the good one go).. And I had a huge problem wtih that.. Now.. that’s diversity overdose…
