My Car Is A Total Loss AND The Seat Belt Saved My Life
A few minutes ago, I got a phone call from the Farmers Insurance agent who was assessing the damage of my car. (Here is the post about my car crash two days ago) First, he told me my car was a total loss. Then he said to me, “You know your seat belt won’t track back anymore. I thought I would be talking to you in a hospital. You are a very lucky lady.”Then he told me that the impact was so severe that most of the internal structures of my car were damaged. I don’t know cars at all, but after listening to a long list of the auto-part jargons, I was pretty scared. Axel was broken; front wheel was almost detached; suspension was smashed and another dozen internal parts were not repairable anymore.
Now I try to rewind and think back the moment when the impact had happened.I only remember that the seat belt was holding me so tight on the seat that I wasn’t really going anywhere even though the car was slamming back and forth for a few seconds. Before the agent hung up the phone, he said to me, “This Honda did what it was supposed to do to save your life. I am glad you were wearing the seat belt.”
Now, to be honest, I am in a much deeper shock than I was 2 days ago right after the accident. I didn’t realize this could be the accident to severely damage my physical well-being if not taking my life. And the only reason why I am still here typing this post is because I worn the seat belt. I know we all beat this topic to death. I saw plenty of people on TV showing us the consequences of not wearing one. But this is BLOODY REAL to me. And to all the people who are reading this post at this moment, WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT! And make sure your passengers are wearing seat belts too. You can save yours and other people’s lives.
I will go back to the body shop this Thursday to pick up my belongings and say good-bye to my Honda before they tear it apart. It’s sad … After all, the car has accompanied me for the last 2 years, moved me to Colorado, and gave a lot of people rides to the mountains after it arrived in Denver. As sad as I am right now, I am truly happy that I am not part of this “total loss”.

Speaking of driving without seatbelts… It still amazes me to this day how people in Miami still drive around in their school bus sized urban assault vehicles chatting away on cell phones while interweaving three lanes of traffic on the highways and inner-city roads. The sad thing is: most of these people don’t even wear their seatbelts! Even if an unbelted Cadillac Escalade driver were to come in contact with a sporty Mini-Cooper, I’d still place my bets on the Italian Job driver wearing his/her seatbelt to survive and rubberneck as the paramedics clean up the brain mash off of the hood of the caddy.
Seatbelts save lives.
Now, motorcycles. That’s a different story.

I don’t even want to know how many people were killed because of talking and driving. I think New York state banned in-car cellphone use? I am not sure if any other states are doing the same thing…
If you look at the odds, driving is more dangerous than rock climbing. So which one is the real extreme sport?

I’m glad you wear your seatbelt too. That’s three friends saved in the last 6 mos. I know an educated, intelligent girl who refuses to wear one. I can’t imagine what even the slightest crash is going to to to her.

The ‘To wear or not to wear’ a seatbelt argument stems from a very small number of cases where the seatbelt actually ‘killed’ the driver. If you have a side-impact accident with - say - a train or other extreme vehicle, there is a chance that the seatbelt will hold you in place while the car crushes in on you. There is also the possibility that it can cut you in half with a severe enough impact. The seatbelt haters always pitch this argument. Personally, I think that if you’re in an accident bad enough for the seatbelt to be a factor in killing you, your chances of walking away were 1/infinity anyway. And - since the chances of being in an accident of the type our beloved Yuna experienced are much higher, the ’safe’ bet is in wearing the belt.
Yuna, your Honda did exactly what it was supposed to - it absorbed as much of the energy as possible from the impact to prevent it from transfering into you. It is a shame that the Yuna’mobile is dead, but it’s last act of love should be admired…

I just remembered one thing… a while ago, I did a post about the pronunciation of cerntain numbers matching with the meaning of “death” in another language.. so people avoid having certain numbers on their license plate. Check this out, my license number is 514-xxxx. “514″ in Chinese is “I want to die”. I think this Honda had its wish fulfilled…
The next time, I will make sure I won’t have similiar numbers on my plate…

I notice your Mike wears helmet all the time..Most amature snowboarders do.. but it’s hard to convince a climber to wear it. It’s uncomfortable and icompromises performance… But Mike wears it.. Now try to convince curmudgeon to wear one.. I bet you will get a lot of resistence…

just surprised to read it is still OK to drive without seatbelt in USA. and you can talk on the mobile as well? down under here, no seatbelt will score you a fine and record with the cop, driving when on the phone will cost you 3 points i think, equals to severe speeding offence, can’t even riding a push bike without a helmet. yet have to admit still there are lots of people ignoring the laws.
i had a rough week, but nothing serious comparing to yours, gf’s dad suddenly died, and i am chickenpox positive at the moment, thought we all had chickenpox and smallpox vaccine injected in primary school, damn, good news is i am having it between 20 and 38 weeks, bub will pop out with antibody in him, bad news is i have to let it run through me, may need to hospitalised if it goes out of control, oh what a fun, cant wait

me too. thought we’ve had heaps immunisation early on.
i am still waiting on the spots to show up. long story short, no one, i mean either the doctor in hospital or my GP knows whether or when it will hit me, wait and see is the best they can say. but they did cancel all my appointments in case i spread the thing around, hehehe, so i am sick and no one wants to see me, how good is that!!!
