MillionDollarHomepage Copycats - Are They Making Any Money?
Ever since I wrote the post about losing bet to the MillionDollarHomePage, I got spammed by the copycats every now and then. Some of them shamelessly claimed that it’s their idea. There are also some honest ones admitting the borrowed idea but proudly put out their own designs.
A lot of people are speculating whether these copycats are actually making any money. Or, are they getting any traffic at all to their sites? So to answer these questions, I put a list together with some stats information of each site.
You will be surprised that this list is actually pretty long.
Update on Oct 2: I am surprised to see so many creators of the “copy-cats” here and I learned that many of them are honest people who are just trying to make a few bucks, buy some homes, pay off the debt and plant a few trees with a borrowed idea. I have then expanded the list to include the honest ones and listed the possible scammers so people don’t fall into their traps. Wish everyone (the honest ones) luck with the pixel business!

I am the creator of the www.zerodebthomepage.com “copy-cat” site. I tried to “hop on the bandwagon” too quickly I think. I have managed one sale so far. But I am redesigning my site to be more useful to someone that does not wish to buy ad space, but may wish to reduce their debt to zero. I still hope to pay down some of my family’s debt with the site by selling ad space, but I hope to actually create a useful site.

As long as we are honest about where the idea is from and credit the original source, I guess anything goes. I just hate people like that dude from millionpennypage and a few other who lied about everything and try to cheat people’s money.
Hope you can pay off your family debt.

You can buy pixels/blocks from the site and add your own banners/ads which contain link to your own page.
There is 1 million pixels in site and you can deside which place you purchase.
This is also quite similar than other sites.

I actually thought of doing something a lot like this several years ago, but I chose not to do anything about it, so I totally respect Alex for doing this. I agree that no one else should try to lay claim to this idea. I’ve put together my own site with a twist - I’m trying to raise money for a new house, and the way my ad spaces work is a little different. I don’t consider it a true “copycat” site, but it is quite similar. I acknowledge Alex for paving the way for this genre of page. When I sell a few more ad spaces, I’m going to buy a 30×30 ad on Alex’s page.
My site is called “The Friendly Neighborhood Home Page.”

I like that one. We might be copycats, but I do think there are some creative twists on the basic idea. The really bad pages are those that just rip off the idea without any originality, and/or those that don’t at least admit to being inspired by the orginal page.

Hi everyone, This is my version of the concept, but I have set up 3different levels of pricing for the better space on the page, and with bigger blocks. From 10¢ per pixel.

In the interest of accuracy, I need to make a correction. You have http://fnhomepage.com listed as selling $594 worth of spaces. I wish that were the case, but to get the page rolling, I decided to sell the first few spaces for only 10% of the regular price. I’ve since made an official policy that the first 50 customers can get this $29 deal. So, I’ve only actually sold $58 worth. Then again, I just officially launched today (the sales were to supportive friends).
Also, I came across an site advertising on Google that you might want to list. The guy makes no mention of Alex Tew whatsoever and implies that he came up with the idea himself.
http://www.milliondollarimage.com
Thanks for your well-wishes to those of us who are trying to expand this genre Alex created and make some honest money. I’m doing a low budget Google Adwords campaign to test the waters. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Hi Jim, thanks for the correction. I just made the change on the page. Not bad for the first day business. Congrats!
Anyway, have fun and good luck!
Good luck with the Google Adwords campaign. But Google may see you guys as direct competitiors..
Oh, I just looked at that site you pointed out.. a possible scam again since the sites he listed on the page are simply some search results from amazon and overstock.com. I do have the intention ot filter out those scammers from the honest ones. So thanks for the tip!

It was really just something I was testing the waters with. It turns out that the water is getting too crowded with sharks.
My url now forwards to a list of current “Million” clone sites. It’s a wiki, so anyone can edit the list if they know of new sites.

I am launching a race for $1m USD with all sites simmilar.
I only consider 1px=$1 sites not the ones selling the whole page for $100
Also I have a nice tooltip in the page enlarging the pictures to a viewable size.
Check out my site and buy some pixels. Any 10×10 will be enough, in fact I may discourage buying more in order to have lots of small areas with image to discover on mouse over.

I can tell you, that I have been doing this since last Thursday (http://www.hundredgrandhomepage) and actively trying to get traffic everyday - and the reality is you are right. Only the original and maybe the penny one are making money. But here is something interesting - I was reading the site source for Alex’s site and I would guess that about 10-20% of his ads are linking directly back to his site. I haven’t ran an exact count, but it was MUCH higher than I had thought.
Just more food for thought. Thanks again for writing this post - nice work,

Hi Duncan, this whole pixel bussiness is defintely hiped up beyond recognition by now so I don’t know if the clones are really making money or not. I am positive some of them have cashed in pretty handsomely. One thing I can tell you though, by putting this copy-cats list together, I noticed that most of the sites are receiving a lot of traffic. A lot of new sites made into top 100,000 site list on Alexa in days or a week. As a blogger, I know it usualy takes us a lot of good posts and endless hours to be able to gain this kind of traffic.. so people defintly are looking at the pixel businesses very closely… however, how much money is sinking into the business is still anyone’s guess…

Hello yuna,
Thanks for having such a complete list of all us “pixel advertisers”.
You may add “PixlesAnyone.com” to your list.
This is a joint venture creation of JPEAdvertising and AskShari.com both very successful internet marketing ventures. What we found with Alex’s idea is the very distinct opportunity to deliver unobtrusive advertising to content rich pages.
Our initial homepage is the typical “million pixel” grid. However, all similarities end when it comes to our marketing strategies.
For obvious reasons, I can’t divulge them here.
I can tell you that opening day for our root domain shot us to under 5000 on Alexa with a 245/1m reach.
Sales have been brisk. The totals are posted on each page.
Our site is a temporary slowpoke while our programmers finish the automated script. Look for that to happen early in the week.
Oh, and for the record, I’m advertising as part of a completely different business on Alex’s site. Our traffic rate is very good, and is delivering highly motivated prospects for a high end ($750) product.

Hi Yuna,
I just wanted to say that we (a friend and I) opened a new website based on Alex Tew’s idea. It is copied, but we know the sucess goes to Million Dollar Homepage.
We’ve open the website with that concept because we need money to open a bar-cinema. It’s like a bar, friends go there to drink a beer, but with a movie playing. It’s kind of a club… (not Fight Club, but Cine Club, heh). Well, I think that is all. If you want to know more, read our FAQ, but it’s in french. Oh yeah, I forgot to say, we are dedicated to french people; so our ads (if any) have to be in french only.
The price is 1$ CAN per pixels, and we’d sell nothing yet. We just opened.

Advertisers buy space on the pixel mountain. When the space is full they can up their bid or new advertisers can join for a higher fee. The higher the payment, the higher they are on the mountain!
Note - Any adverts knocked off the bottom of the site get a partial refund! So their advertising costs stay low!
And we could get a world record if the prices get high enough!

Inspired by MDHP, I introduced a custom designed and developed grid for showcasing ads on www.shardex.com.
The added functionality allows the user to select any available square(s) that they wish to buy and directly purchase the square(s) from the flash web-app.
If a square is clicked on, the grid zooms and centers the square for increased visibility.
More options will be available in future iterations.

It is really successfull and we have a lot of traffic, mails and pixels day by day. Unbelievable what Alex has started and we are all swiming with this wave. Seriously.
I think I’ve come up with a new way of looking at the site that gives you a little bit more than just the browsing and click through that the other sites do.
Every time you click on an ad you not only get taken through to the linked page but you also get a cow. My patented ‘cow-cards’ allow you to learn a bit more about my resident bovines, print them off and keep them, and collect them. You can even pitch them against other cows is a seriously moooomentous game of top trumps.
Only have one ad at the moment but am hoping for more when I really get started….

Hello there, nothing much to say, just to add my own site just in case someone want to write up an article in their blog, they can talk about the first pixelsite from FRANCE, yes that’s a first, but that’s about all there is of “new” in it.
I just draw FRANCE territory on the grid, so it has its own look and because we french people like to stare at our country, we call it the HEXAGON, because it has six sides, how did you guess ?!?..
I also did the “top sponsor” that we can find on millionpennyhomepage.
And that’s about it ! The site has launched last sunday and I haven’t sold a bloc, but I am a bit stubborn and despite people telling me to add fake ones to encourage others, I want my site to stay REAL. So if nobody wants to buy my pixels for the whole 5 years, so be it !
My homepage will have this nice France drawing and it’ll be good too. I can still use the blog on this site, so it’s not like the 5 years will be paid for nothing !
No… I’m not pessimistic about it, but I find the time very long when I read Alex Tew’s blog and how quick he’s selling his pixels..
By the way, I also bought some of his pixel, so my site has an added value for my virtual customers.. And also because that’s a cheap way to say him THANK YOU for bringing a bit of freshness, I was beginning to find internet boring (just joking
Best regards,

PS: in case you’re asking, MonPremierMillion means My First Million, yes I didn’t went for the cheap challenge at 0.10/pixel either… stubborn I am stubborn I’ll die

Nickels for Katrina (http://www.nickelsforkatrina.org) was the first pixel advertising web site to donate 100% of its proceeds to charity. All money from the site’s revenues goes straight to the American Red Cross. NFK has been online since October 6. It began as a project by 2 Carnegie Mellon University Information Systems juniors, me (Keith Torluemke) and my roommate (Steve Kaplan) from our dorm room.
NFK, true to its name, charges $.05 per pixel. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for the cause. We promise advertisers’ links will be up for 2 years (~until we graduate from CMU!).
Steve went down to with a group of CMU students to aid Habitat for Humanity in the relief effort last weekend (Oct. 20-23). Pictures and descriptions can be found on our site’s blog: http://nickelsforkatrina.blogspot.com/.
We have raised over $2,250 thus far and have been featured on several blogs. This week, we are on Blogger’s “Blogs of Note.” If you are advertising charity-related pixel web sites, please give us a plug! We were the first!
Cheers,
Keith

The Million Dollar Home Page is well known by now, and there are quite a lot of “copycat” sites out there on the net.
Some of these sites are good, some tasteless and a handfull quite clever (Apart of Alex Tew’s, which is pure genious cause he was the first!)
One of these Sites I found is the http://milliondollarpixellottery.com Site. This one let’s you buy pixel’s and also give’s you the chance to win $ 1.000.000 ( 1 Million Dollars)!
Which is a nice idea, since you place an ad which might cost you fifty bucks more than on the Million Dollar Home Page, but it has the added bonus of a Lottery which might make you a Million richer. The chances a also a lot higher than in a normal lottery.
Well your chances obviously increase the more PayPal Transaction Receipts you generate..but it’s a great idea i think! Check it out at http://www.milliondollarpixellottery.com

What do you think about these new web sites selling pixels? I’ve just put mine online Bloc de pub at http://www.blocdepub.com, in french, and i’m trying to promote it on the Web. And I also make it cheaper, only 10 euros for a bloc of 10×10 pixels, to allow more people to advertise on it (like blogs or personnal web site). I just think 100$ for a bloc (what the other sites are doing) is quite expensive for an individual who has his own personnal web site !
Do you think this can of web site can last for a long time or it’s juste a temporary web site ?

The “takeover” has happened!
Joe and Mable have hijacked the PixelsAnyone site… let the fun begin!
Get there quickly and you can get in on the “2-fer”. Yes, Joe is giving y’all a huge deal… Double exposure for the original price.
Why go there? Well… ’cause we really want to send Mable to Paris. That’s been her lifelong dream. Catch the details right here… http://www.askshari.com/track/t/1607/
Then, hustle on over to the original PixelsAnyone site and lay claim to your pixel space on the homepage.
Here’s the link for that…http://www.askshari.com/track/t/1603/
Joe tells me just as soon as he’s physically copied all the current images and links to the Joe and Mable page, the “2-fer” is over. I wouldn’t waste any time getting there.

Hello,
I have always been trying to be innovative, and after the zerodollarshomepage.com (mentioned by Yuna here),
I’d like to introduce you another new approach, - new ideas from the PixelAdNet.
What we’ve done is an integration of the old good banners and the moderen pixels ideas. What we’ve got is real banners exchange system, easy to be embedded into any website (with just two lines of html code) and able to fit almost any website layout. Other great features are free traffic exchange and up to 70% commissions to our Publishers.
Everyone is Welcome!

Hi,
I’m an actor/filmmaker (and teacher) here in Tokyo, Japan.
Yep, I jumped on the bandwagon too.
I put up a site based on Alex Tew’s idea in an attempt to help me finish my first feature film.
I hope to pay bills and do some good for some special people as well. So far, no takers. My site is basic. But after New Years, I may be switching to a dedicated server and script system. I’m holding off to measure the level of interest so far. I’m getting hits, though. That’s because I purchased a $100 block on Alex’s site.
All the best to all.

We too are attempting to build upon the Million Dollar Homepage concept. We are trying to take a different approach to it and feel that improving upon an existing idea forms a stable foundation to build upon. Think about what copy means … To make a near replicate image or mirror what someone else is doing. So if Ford comes out with a V8 engine capable of getting 40 MPG and Chevy takes the same concept or technology and creates a Chevy Trail Blazer that gets 44 MPG, do you consider that copying? Or would you consider that someone taking an idea or a concept and improving upon it in their own way is unique?
Our site, Ad Space: Get Yours is taking a different approach to creative advertising. We are creating a community out of our advertisers and visitors by providing a clean, organized, and non-porn related advertising space. Small, medium and large businesses can utilize the space worry free of the negative associations that come with such a site. We are hosting zero spam contests which are sponsored on the advertiser’s behalf as well as are redistributing portions of the revenue with donations to various charities further offering the visitors to our site something more than just pixel ads.
What we have found from our statistics thus far is that we are retaining more repeat visitors to our site while steadily increasing new visitors to the site which in turn is generating more traffic to our advertiser’s websites and potentially increasing their traffic and increasing their potential customer base.
Check it out for yourself; we believe you will then begin to realize that our concept is not just a “copy” of the Million Dollar Homepage but possibly the next logical step in the progression of something useful. Visit www.getyouradspace.com today and find out how Chray Studios is connecting people with people.

We also tried to copy the concept of the Million Dollar Home Page, but took it to a new level with the use of banner ads. Now people get more bang for their buck and people are actually able to see what a site is advertising. It is a better deal and a new look on an old idea. http://www.bannersbringbusiness.com — Banners Bring Business
