I’ll have the long snapper and an order of fries
The long snapper. Probably one of the most underappreciated position on any NFL team. Guys make a career of it and teams are more than happy to have this specialist on their team.
But why? All they do is hike the ball!
Ahh yes, this common misconception. However, being bent over backwards, throwing an oddly shaped ball between your legs 10 yards back and hitting a target less than a square yard is a lot harder then it sounds. Sure, if you practice hard enough at it, you probably can become a tight end who also can do this somewhat consistently. But not all the time.
Football is the ultimate team sport. For one play to work, everyone has to be in sync and have perfect timing on the play. Many fans just see a running back going through the middle for a 4 yard gain, but what they may miss is the offensive lineman adjusting to a blitz, a tight end pulling double duty with a left guard, the fullback covering an incoming cornerback and a wide receiver running a route just to give the safety the illusion a pass may be coming his way.
And this is only for a run.
For a field goal kick, the concept of teamwork goes into over drive. From the time of the snap to the time of the kick, to get the play off you only have three seconds, often less. What needs to happen is
1) The long snapper has to hike the ball behind him 10 yards and have it land in the hands of the holder who is kneeling at the spot of the kick. That means you have less than a square yard window to hit. Anywhere outside this and there is a good chance the kick will fail.
2) After the ball is hiked, the long snapper has to immediately block the opposing line. He literally needs to adjust within a split second from having his head and arms between his legs to a blocking position to hold off a 280 lbs linebacker who is trying to collapse the pocket and block the kick.
3) The holder sets the ball, the kicker kicks it. (there is more to it than that, but we are focusing on the under appreciated long snapper here)
To have this quickness and this accuracy and to do it every single time, is a skill. If a person messes up a snap two or three time, he is sure to lose his job since this would cost a team anywhere between 3 and 9 points. That’s why long snappers such as Mike Bartrum is such a valued resource on the Philadelphia eagles roster. He is one of the most consistent long snappers in the league and has earned his spot on the roster for years to come because of this. My friend Kevin in Denver, being a typical the rabid eagles fan, proudly sports his #88 Mike Bartrum jersey every Sunday.
Finally, to touch on Yuna’s main point, why not just take a linebacker or tight end and make them the long snapper? As I mentioned above, it’s a precision position that cant just be taught during a training camp. Plus, you must take into account how often players change on a team (See the Philadelphia Eagles, this is the first time in 5 years they had the same 3 people at the linebacker position to start the season as they did to finish the season). Inconsistency at long snapping can potentially cost your team at least one kick per game, and in a league where many games are decided by a field goal or less, this is unacceptable. It could turn a 10-6 playoff team to being a mediocre 8-8 team.
And there is some multitasking at the long snapper position, but just opposite to what Yuna has suggested. Instead of a Tight End doing long snapping duty’s, a long snapper may fill in for a Tight End from time to time. Look at Mighty Mike Bartrum. He has almost a 50% rate of receptions for touchdowns (4 for 9) and a 66% rate of receptions for first downs (6 for 9).
To relate to the buisness spin that Yuna placed on it, the Moral is, sure, its good to be flexable, however, if it can cost you the big game over and over again, its good to have a specialist on hand.
So, on every nfl Sunday, I am at home rooting for you, Mr. Long Snapper. Because somebody has to!

OK, I totally agree when kicking a field goal, it is all about the team work. I am not down-crediting the long snapper’s importance at that moment simply because if the long snapper misses an inch, you lose your superbowl title if not lucky. What I am trying to argue here is that comparing with the skills/phyiscal demands required by other positions, the skill for long snapper is really not that hard to master.
Like I said earlier, every soccer player knows how to kick field goal. Ok, it might not be that far from the gate, but you got a person in front of that gate. Yes, nobody is going to threat you buy rushing to you and crush your bones while kicking soccer field, but when it comes down to a kick.. it’s only a kick..

I will have to defend Paco on this one Curmudgeon… If you have sat through a few football games, you have to notice that the game can’t even go on without team coordination… The quaterback would be sacked beyond recognition and you can forget about rushing any yards.. period!
I guess we all have our beloved sports.. and for my and Paco’s case.. we love watching football and basketball. Besides the excitements, it was also because these two sports are team oriented.. Why Lakers didn’t even make into playoff last season? Cuz stupid Kobe did’t play TEAMBALL!
Hockey might be your passion.. but that doesn’t mean other sports are not team oriented.
Paco is probably more cumudgeon than you are when it comes to sports.. so… hmm.. where did he go?? Oh.. getting his Eagle’s Jersey ready to come to Denver for the Bronco game..

Now.. here is a thing that always bugs me when people are talking about the type of sports that they don’t really watch..
“Oh. I don’t watch basketball.. so it sucks.. ”

I have watched only a handful of hockey games.. so I shut up cuz I don’t know the ins and outs of that sport..

Ok, these NBA guys are probably severly over-paid. But that’s because the market is willing to pour the money into NBA. WNBA gets shit cuz nobody is watching.. It’s not NBA’s fault that these guys are paid big bucks. People love basketball. People love watching it and playing it.. It’s everybody’s game. Period! The guys may behave badly off court.. But the sport itself rocks with those guys pulling some unbelievable moves on the court. Rent Michael Jordan’s video when he was playing for the Bulls.. It’s arts! Man!
Basketball is actually my #1 sport.. So now you are getting me all worked up..

I watch college ball every year…primarily ’cause I have money riding on it. Admittedly, I don’t watch professional basketball, but there was a point when I actually did, and did like basketball a lot more. In fact, used to play basketball when I was in school. So I understand what the game is at least SUPPOSED to be.
Perhaps I should clarify. I don’t have an issue with basketball, so much as I do the NBA and the players in it. They’re greedy, travel CONSTANTLY, behave badly on AND off the court, lope lazily on defense and expect us all to act surprised and be happy that the Lakers, Bulls, or whoever is the “flavor of the week” team won yet ANOTHER Championship. Honestly, it’s like watching Don King rig another fight. It’s lost its credibility, in my opinion. And THAT is why I do not like or watch professional basketball. It’s not basketball anymore.
For the record, Michael Jordan…class act, and a revolutionary player. Unfortunately, now everyone is concentrating more on being the next MJ, and being paid like him rather than on actually playing ball.
I know you’ll disagree with me, and that’s okay. I’ll never agree with you, and you’ll never agree with me. As long as we’re okay with that (I am) and don’t get personal about it. I don’t want to get in a fight over something so trivial.

Ha.. you probably will be surprised that I actually agree with you this time… The quality of the professional leagues have slipped so much… especially NBA.. At one point, a few of us gave up watching the games after Jordan left. Those good old time when Big Bird was playing may never come back.. That’s probably why people are into NCAA now.. and I am so tempted to make the switch..
Well… public forum is a place to express our individual opinions.. nothing personal here…although I don’t mind going several rounds to debate with anyone.. At the end of the day, you are a climber I admire who’s into different sports .. and a curmudgeon in the mountain whom I won’t be able to convince..
