Help The Katrina Victims - This Post Will Stay On the Top For A While
What’s happening in New Orleans is just devastating. Although I am sort of out of the way and not able to offer direct help, I can still open my wallet and use my village to help in some ways. Being said, this post will stay on the top of this blog for a while.

Hurricane 2005 Relief - Red Cross Credit Card Donation Site
Update: By Sept 2, Red Cross has received more than $200 million donations from individuals and corporations. The figure still falls short of the total amount of $550 million the agency received after last December’s Tsunami. This is a disaster happened in our own backyard, so let’s keep up with the good work and give a little more. And thanks to all of our international readers for your help and support!

It’s aweful what’s happening down there. I received an email from my friend, if there is a Wawa in your area, they have a donation matching program with the American Red Cross. You can get $1, $2, or $5 coupons at the Wawa when you checkout, and Wawa will match dollar for dollar on your donation. More bang for the buck. I don’t know, but I’m sure there are others doing the same. Come on Starbucks!!!

Two refugees from New Orleans walked into my family’s kitchenware store today looking for pots and pans. They used to be Tulane University’s staffs. They only took a few personal items with them and came to Nashville to meet with some scholars they know from Vanderbilt University. Now stunned and realizing that they are not going to have their home back, they had no idea what to do. We ended up giving them some kitchenware for free and offered them our number in case they need any help. Deep inside, I was really freaking out… If I were them with no home, no job and no relatives nearby, what the hell were I going to do? Money can only solve a few problems. Starting all over again in another place is going to take whole lot more than just money… I truly wish this couple all the luck they can get…

FYI - if you live in Colorado, and plan on donating through the Red Cross, you should think about using the Colorado Red Cross Chapter web site (denver-redcross.org). There’s a challenge grant that will match you dollar for dollar up to $250, up to a total of $2 million. I have no direct connections to the impacted areas, but have several friends that either have family down there, or are even housing “refugee” family members here in Carbondale. Thanks for making this a priortiy, Yuna!

Thanks guys for the info… I am glad we have a match program in Colorado too.. I am donating again.. that marks my 4th 100 dollar bill to the Katrina relief… I will just have to eat subways insteadof Whole Foods for a few more days …
