What’s Up With The Male DNA II - Why Men Don’t Pick Up Their Socks

I have dated a few guys in the past and they all share the same characteristics. That is, they either tossed their socks around and never picked them up, or I would find those annoying dirty dishes pilling up with left over lettuce and tomato skins in their sinks all the time. The worst part is that my efforts of trying to persuade/teach them to pick up their socks usually went no where. It seems that getting guys to do cleaning and homemaking stuff is harder than pushing an elephant’s butt. Or I should say, when the guys are sitting on the couches after the dinner, their butts are bigger and heavier than the elephant’s. I start to wonder whether this is another symptom caused by the limitation of the male’s DNA.
After a few digs in hoping of finding some scientific evidences to explain the men-don’t-pick-up-socks symptom, I have concluded that the male DNA has an absolute different perspective on the meanings of “clean” and “neat”. Here is a list of my research results:
- Men are usually not scared of dangerous things such as death, guns, fights and blood. However, soiled diaper and an iron could cause them to flee the ground as fast as they can.
- Male’s DNA only recognizes a few places that need to be kept clean and neat, such as the garage with zillions different kind of tools. Sorry, the house where the girlfriend/wife keeps her sanitary products is not on the list.
- Male DNA takes “casual glance” approach while hunting for the dust bunny, while the Female DNA usually takes the “Gorilla” method. That explains the 30 second vs. 300 minute vacuuming speed difference between male and female.
- Male DNA has very low standard while evaluating the neatness of a house, that is, as long as they don’t trip over anything, work is done.
- Male DNA shares a very intimate relationship with the couch and the TV. That explains the difficulty of getting men to clean the dishes after the dinner.
So, after understanding the root cause, I was wondering if there would be any ways to shrink the gap so we can finally share the duties together. After all, there are a lot of working ladies out there who desperately need their men’s help to keep the things in order. Matter of the fact, the issues is so common that there are a few books out there to teach women how to get guys’ help to share the domestic responsibility. Here is a good article to start with: “How to get your mate to help on the home front”. If you need serious heavy duty advice, check out this book “Lazy Husband”.
But seriously, don’t you think it is sad that ladies have to study books and papers to get guys to help?

I think now that I have two teenage boys that messiness is genetically in men. But they can be trained out of it. I hear Marines are very neat.
And guys don’t? Guys don’t understand how to get women to do what they want either, they just don’t think the answer is in a book.

Before I hide my head in shame, I will admit to: being female and rarely ever wearing socks.
1. Ironing. There’s a dry cleaner for every Starbucks in Miami. Buy a latte and then pick up the work shirts.
2. My apartment is a mess, but the kitchen and bathroom are always sanitary. Do I lose points for this?
3. Men usually take a “casual approach” to searching for anything because they know that only a wife/girlfriend/female roomate will angrily get up off their ass, walk over, and move the two bottles in front of the item just to grab it for them. Yes. I’m guilty for this too.
4. If I don’t trip over anything in my house, that’s miraculous. Even if it were picked up, there’s always a chance of tripping over my cat.
5. After 3 hours of rock climbing, who wants to clean dishes after making dinner?
Last time I checked, I had two X chromosomes. Perhaps guys left the ‘extra leg’ on the floor.

Umm.. Ron is right… you never see a book titled “How to turn your woman into a football lunatic”… I have seen hippie wearing real muddy dirty socks.. so Paco’s suggestion won’t work.. I have also met a guy who would wipe my microwave everytime he came to my dorm room… and then.. we have Kris whose cat is always tripped over her junks.. When I had a place in jersey, it was me and two other guys from my fraternity. The place was absolutly spotless, all the time. We would clean the place from top to bottom every weekend and spot check it twice a week. When it was my turn to vacuum, I would make sure the carpet marks from the vaccuum would line up.
My girlfriend’s (at the time) place? I was thrilled when there wasnt a fast food wrapper laying around on the living room table.

I can tell you one thing when it comes to cleaning it wouldn’t matter how well males cleaned, the woman would always come in and do it again because they believe we haven’t done it correctly in the first place or to their standard.
We basically can’t win, you do the cleaning they aren’t happy, you don’t do the cleaning and they aren’t happy.
