Here’s the solution…
To solve any mathematical problem you need variables.
So what we’re trying to solve is a 2 digit number minus each digit, i.e. –> ab - a - b = x
but (ab) is represented mathematically as –> 10a + b
with this substitution, the equation now becomes
10a + b -a -b = x
which simplifies to 9a = x
this means whatever 2 digit number you chose, it just has to be a multiple of 9, i.e.
9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81 (multiple of 9’s)
Check the chart, all of these numbers with have the same symbol, there will be other numbers with this symbol but mathematically is not possible. These other numbers w/ the same symbol are there to make the pattern not easily detected.

Beth, you sound like my kind of girl! Nothing like a little Algebra to stimulate us on a Monday. I got it by noticing the symbol for ‘0′ was always the one selected. 0,9,18,27,… were all the same.
Note: In one of your above equations: 10a + b -a -b = x If you had used ‘y’ instead of ‘x’, you could have spelled ‘b-a-b-y’ like this: 10a + b -a -b -y = 0.
